This, our first formal exhibition brings together a group of eighteen students who have been attending painting classes at Fitzroy Painting for Beginners for a number of years. Some have been attending classes for many years, and some just for a couple. All began as complete beginners. Over time each student has learnt to develop their own interests, focus and direction; to master the technical side of painting and considerations such as composition, tone and colour relationships, as well as working with professional materials and proper presentation. The themes vary widely, and include a range of subject matter; formal, modernist studies derived from local architecture, home-grown fruit trees reflecting on the broader topic of cyclical nature of life, domestic studies of personal collections, travel, family, still-life, landscape and painted collage demonstrate the breadth of interests and exploration of the students choice of subject. Coming from all over Melbourne, the group has become a community, and this year has been spent working together towards this exhibition. It has also provided an opportunity to explore not only working to a theme but also to discover the other side of being an artist, as each student has taken a part in making the exhibition happen.
